Every week from June to October, bring home a share of our freshly harvested naturally grown produce – tender gourmet salad greens, exotic heirloom tomatoes, fragrant herbs, sweet peppers, carrots, beans, broccoli… all grown without synthetic pesticides and fertilizers in a manner that is healthy for you, your family and the land that supports us all. Only a handful of memberships still available.

What is a CSA

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is an attempt to address the many problems of modern agriculture by redefining the relationship between the farmer, consumer and the natural biological systems which comprise a farm. A CSA program is a type of “cooperative,” where a consumer financially commits to a full season of produce months in advance of the start of the growing season. Each week from June to October, members receive a variety of freshly harvested crops. Since the nutritional value of produce declines significantly while on supermarket shelves, as a member you will enjoy the freshest, most nutritious produce available – harvested daily for you and your family by the farm staff.

CSA provides the farmer with several practical advantages including the resources to buy seeds and other supplies before the first spring berries ripen in the field and allows the farmer to focus on actually growing crops during the growing season instead of fretting over sales and delivery schedules. The rewards and risks inherent in agriculture are shared by the farm community, which means that in years of environmental or weather constraints, members may receive more of one crop but less of another.

It’s more than just Vegetables!

A CSA is a concept that offers ways to reconnect with the land in an endless variety of possibilities from helping the local economy, practicing good stewardship of the land, supporting natural farming methods, eating safe food, creating friendships and fostering community. You have the opportunity to become part of a movement that is larger than any of us.

Our farm is primarily black sandy loam that has not been farmed in ten years. We have three large 1/2 acre ponds on the property that provide us with safe fresh water. We are asked time and time again - Are You Certified Organic? We believe in organic farming but we are not Certified.

Our approach to farming seeks to maintain and improve the productivity of the land by encouraging and enhancing natural biological processes.

The foundation for healthy plants and animals is healthy soil. At Schooner Farms we strive to grow strong, healthy crops by stimulating soil biology, growing cover crops to build soil structure and using innovative methods of pest control. Quite simply, we practice sustainable, non-conventional agriculture.

Schooner Farms builds healthy soils by nourishing the living component of the soil, the microbial inhabitants that release, transform, and transfer nutrients. Soil organic matter contributes to good soil structure and water-holding capacity. We feed soil biota and build soil organic matter with cover crops, compost, and biologically based soil amendments. These produce healthy plants that are better able to resist disease and insect predation.

We practice organic methods and would rather concentrate our efforts on bringing you a quality product than filling out a bunch of paperwork. Our philosophy is to work with mother nature not against her. This philosophy has been the foundation of our natural pond and lake management company since it's beginning in 1996 and it remains at the heart of everything we do.

The produce you buy in the grocery is eye candy; it looks fresh, ripe and attractive. Take a bite out of a tomato in the dead of winter and it's like chewing foam. We all know fresh veggies from the garden taste incredible and are so much better for you and the environment!

http://www.schoonerberries.com/content/5972

What is a CSA

Community Supported Agriculture, or CSA, is a relationship of mutual support and commitment between farmers and members- as it implies a willingness to share both the bounty from the land and at least some of the risks involved with production.

In return for an annual membership fee to cover the production costs of the farm, CSA members receive a weekly share of the highest quality chemical free -grown harvest during the local growing season. When members obtain food from local farmers, they are directly supporting small, family farms in their community as well as receiving the freshest available produce.

CSA is a Partnership between the Members and the Farmers
At the core of CSA is the idea that members support their farmer by sharing in the inherent risks of agriculture (poor weather, drought, disease, early frost, crop failure and so on) and rewards (the bounty from a good season!). Therefore Schooner Farms will act in good faith to provide fresh organically grown produce for the 20-week season. Part of the CSA experience is getting to know your farm and your farmers.

You become involved in a community of farmers and eaters committed to healthy food and a cleaner environment!

http://www.schoonerberries.com/content/5606

Schooner Farms - Beekeeping Classes - How Sweet It Is!

So You Want to Be A Beekeeper?
